NEW Curbside Trash & Recyclable Procedures

The Town will be changing its curbside trash and recycling pickup procedures.  The Town has contracted with Casella Waste to pick up trash and recyclables starting on Monday September 8th, 2014.  Casella Waste has started to deliver 96 gallon trash and recyclable containers to each residential unit that is eligible for curbside collection.  Starting September 8th the collection of trash and recyclables will be on the same day which will be Monday for the entire town.  Please DO NOT use the new containers until Monday September 8thIf a holiday falls on a Monday collection will be on Tuesday.  See Casella brochure on the Highway Department webpage “NEW Curbside Collection Procedures”, a link in the left column of that page. 

Starting on September 8th the new containers should be placed at the side of the roadway the night before or before 7 am on the day of.  Casella will be utilizing an automated process to empty the containers.  Casella will only pick up trash and recyclables in the containers they are providing.  They will not be picking up trash from any other type of container or any materials left beside the containers.  Residents who have a permit can bring items that do not fit in the containers to the Town transfer station. 

Yard Waste will still be collected by the Highway Department as is done presently.   Residents with permits can also bring yard waste to the Town transfer station. 

Only residents who are eligible for curbside collection in accordance with the Town’s Solid Waste Ordinance will receive curbside collection service.  Residents must live on a Town or State road to receive curbside collection service.  Apartment buildings with 4 or more units are not eligible for curbside collection service. 

On some streets residents who live on dead end streets without cul-de-sacs will need to put their containers on the specified side of the street in accordance with the information provided by Casella.  A yellow tag will be provided to those residents that this applies to when the containers are delivered.

The Board of Selectmen based upon the recommendations of the Solid Waste Study Committee and Road Agent Ronnie Pelissier made the decision to transition to contracted curbside collection to reduce operating costs to the Town.  The committee report is located on the Highway Department webpage under the Solid Waste link.
