Understanding the Calculation of Your Total Tax Bill

Your tax bill collects money to go to four different governmental entities or units:  state education funding, local schools, the town, and the county.

The state education funding tax rate is set by the state legislature.

The local school tax rate is based on the total amount of money the school district must raise for Allenstown students, which is based primarily on the school budget and other expenditures approved by the school district meeting and Allenstown voters by ballot vote.  The amount to be collected from each property owner is based on the assessed value of each owner’s property in conjunction with the tax rate.  See more information below.

The town tax rate is based on the total amount of money the town must raise, which is based primarily on the town budget and other expenditures approved by the town meeting and Allenstown voters by ballot vote.  The amount to be collected from each property owner is based on the assessed value of each owner’s property in conjunction with the tax rate.

*Because the total amount of money that the Town and School needs to raise generally doesn't change by a drastic amount, the tax rate is usually adjusted to be lower when assessed property values are high and to be a higher rate when assessed property values are low, resulting in approximately the same total dollars raised.

The county tax rate is based on the county budget, which is set by the county delegation (state representatives from each county).

                                                                                      2022               2021              2020

The state education funding tax rate is:                        $0.88             $2.04             $2.03

The local school tax rate is:                                          $10.65          $18.06           $14.89

The town tax rate is:                                                      $6.21            $8.55              $9.62

The county tax rate is:                                                   $1.76           $2.85              $2.76

TOTAL TAX RATE FOR PROPERTY OWNERS:       $19.50          $31.50           $29.30

Locate your assessed value on your tax bill.  Divide it by 1,000 (e.g. a value of $380,600 divided by 1,000 equals 380.6).

Multiply that number by the tax rate above to determine how much of your tax bill goes to state education funding, local schools, the town, and the county. For example, 380.6 x 6.21 = $2,363.53 goes to the town out of a total property tax bill of 380.6 x 19.50 = $7,421.70.

*Note that taxes are rounded to the nearest dollar.
